The second free practice session in China was a close contest, as Hamilton finished seven thousandths of a second ahead of Raikkonen.

Raikkonen set the pace in the first session, leading Hamilton by a tenth on softs, before the Mercedes driver became the first to take the lead with over an hour left on the 90-minute session, with ultrasofts in simulation.

Hamilton set a time of 1m33.482s, despite having a off time, when he locked up as he passed Esteban Ocon and later on when rocking softs.

Raikkonen was the last of the frontrunners to strap on ultrasofts, and went behind Hamilton with 0.007s, shuffling Bottas to third with 0.033s.

Raikkonen had the pace to lead the pack, but lost time when he passed Marcus Ericsson at Turn 11. His teammate, Vettel was 0.108s off the pace in fourth. Verstappen was behind by 0.341s in fifth.

Ricciardo complained about his throttle pad map and brakes throughout the session and finished a poor ninth, 1.075s behind.

Alonso finished 10th on the grid 1.150s off the pace.¬†Vandoorne was 14th fastest ahead of Toro Rosso’s Brendon Hartley and Williams driver Sergey Sirotkin.

Vandoorne’s session came to an early end with just under 15 minutes remaining when he stopped on track with a loose wheel.
