“This is my last game for BVB, which we decided together some time ago,” Stoger said in his post-match media conference.

BVB midfielder Sebastian Rode revealed earlier this month the squad were expecting to have a new man in charge for next term and Stoger’s exit suggests a succession plan has been formulated.

Nice’s Lucien Favre, who has previously had spells with Hertha Berlin and Borussia Monchengladbach, is widely expected to step in at Signal Iduna Park.

Sunday’s loss to Hoffenheim saw them finish 29 points shy of champions Bayern Munich and outside the top three for just the second time in eight seasons.

Stoger did manage to provide a measure of stability after Bosz was cut loose, although the short-term contract he was handed never seemed likely to materialise into a permanent appointment.
