Scott Quigg is yet to record a win in California, as he fell to his second defeat in a unanimous points loss to Oscar Valdez.

Quigg could not make the weight and could not challenge for the WBO featherweight as a result, with the Bury native blaming a broken foot for falling short.

The WBO featherweight champion, Oscar Valdez remained unbeaten, winning 117-111, 117-111, 118-110 on the judges scorecards.

Valdez is still the champion at the featherweight class, and continued his rise to glory, as heavy rainfall threatened the fight.

Quigg caused the Mexican problems in the fifth and eleventh round, with his weight and experience proving to be an advantage.

Valdez took control in the first two rounds, with his accuracy and flashy combinations causing problems for the Bury man.

Quigg had taken a cut to his eye, early on, but he countered the champion’s combinations with body shots.

Valdez stumbled in the fifth round, after a left hook from Quigg, followed by a glancing but sturdy right connected.

The Mexican always produced a fine response anytime a punch hit him, and despite Quigg’s weight advantage, his combination of straight rights and sharp uppercuts showed his talent.

Valdez appeared tired in the eighth round, but emerged from a dogfight he was forced into.

The WBO featherweight belt holder was bleeding in the mouth, with his challenger nursing a broken nose at the end of the ninth round.

It was quite clear that Valdez would emerge the clear winner, but Quigg almost won via stoppage in the penultimate round, when he rocked the champion with a left hook, but an obvious low blow gave the Mexican a much needed breather.

Valdez hit back before the final bell, coming out top with zero qualms.
