Arsene Wenger has revealed there was never a chance of Mohamed Elneny leaving Arsenal, as he was not prepared to let him go.

The Egypt international is not a regular for the Gunners squad, but is considered as an important squad player.

Elneny was linked with an exit, with more playing time a factor he is looking for.

Wenger offered the utility player a new long-term contract, warding off interest.

“He a super-popular player and everybody inside the club loves him,” the long-serving Frenchman told Arsenal TV.

“But he’s not only loved, he is also a very good player and he showed that in Moscow. I never wanted him to leave, I always wanted him to stay. I must say that we had demands for him but he always wanted to stay too.”
